Accutane and Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Known generically as isotretinoin, Accutane is a medicine manufactured by Hoffmann La Roche. Accutane gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 1982 to treat severe acne.
The American Journal of Gastroenterology published a study in March 2010 about use of drugs containing isotretinoin, such as Accutane, and the risk of inflammatory bowel disease. In their results, the researchers noted a four percent increase in the risk of developing ulcerative colitis when using drugs like Accutane. They also noticed that in those study participants who used drugs like Accutane for longer durations, especially longer than two months, and in higher dosages, the risk of ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, increased significantly.
Accutane & Ulcerative Colitis
A kind of inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis has been associated with Accutane use, especially in high dosages. Signs of ulcerative colitis include pain and cramping of the abdomen, abnormal sounds emanating from the abdominal region, bloody stools, fever, and weight loss.
