Testosterone Gel Heart Problems

testosterone gel heart problems

Testosterone gels are manufactured by many different pharmaceutical companies, with the most widely used brands manufactured by AbbVie and Eli Lilly & Company. Testosterone replacement drugs were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the 1950s. Testosterone replacement therapies, including testosterone gels and other drugs, were initially approved to treat patients with a medical condition that caused a testosterone deficiency, such as undergoing chemotherapy.

Even though testosterone replacement drugs, like testosterone gels, were intended for those who were unable to produce a healthy level of testosterone on their own, testosterone gels have now been prescribed as a way to treat signs of aging in male patients. The decrease in testosterone levels as male patients age has been termed low testosterone, or low T.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2013 recorded the health of older male patients using testosterone gels. The researchers found that testosterone gels increased the risk of cardiovascular problems, especially in those patients who already had a history of poor heart health.

This study, and many like it, have prompted the FDA to look more closely at testosterone gel heart problems.

Testosterone Gels & Heart Health

Patients who used testosterone gels have suffered heart attacks, strokes, and in some cases, have succumbed to the drug’s effects.
