New Study: Celexa & Zoloft Disrupt Unborn Baby Bone Growth

topamax_birth_defects_topamax_lawsuit_settlementsCelexa and Zoloft, two drugs used to treat depression, are linked to many types of birth defects. And according to a recently published study, these two antidepressants are now linked to poor bone development.

The study, Citalopram and sertraline exposure compromises embryonic bone development, appeared in Molecular Psychiatry in September 2015.

The researchers looked at bone development in zebrafish embryos and human adult stem cells.

In both cases, they discovered that exposure to either Celexa (citalopram) or Zoloft (sertraline) resulted in inhibited bone growth.

In concluding their findings, the researchers emphasized that, “[t]hese results highlight the need to further investigate the risks of SSRI use during pregnancy in exposing unborn babies to potential skeletal abnormalities.”

Twelve Families File Lexapro Birth Defects Lawsuits

SSRI Antidepressant Lexapro Birth Defect LawsuitThe lives of twelve families have been permanently impacted by Lexapro, an antidepressant drug. These 12 families took their cases to court by filing individual Lexapro birth defects lawsuits targeting the drug’s manufacturer, Forest Pharmaceuticals, who also makes Celexa.

The families filed 12 Lexapro lawsuits in Cabell County Circuit Court in West Virginia.

They claim that Forest knew about the Lexapro birth defects risk from multiple studies. They allege that the pharmaceutical company still decided to market the drug to pregnant women and women who could become pregnant.

Furthermore, these families assert that Forest made no effort to update the Lexapro drug label with a warning about the birth defects risk.

According to the West Virginia Record, the families are seeking compensatory and punitive damages.

New Study Links Prozac & Paxil with Birth Defects

ssri_birth_defectsA study published in the British Medical Journal links certain antidepressants with birth defects when used by pregnant women. The National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities in Atlanta led the study.

Researchers looked at selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, a class of antidepressants often referred to as SSRIs. The SSRIs included in the study were Paxil, Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, and Zoloft.

The researchers recorded an increase in birth defects in children whose mothers used Prozac or Paxil early in their pregnancy. They reviewed 28,000 pregnancies between 1997 and 2009.

When women used Paxil one month before or during their first trimester, the risk of birth defects increased. For anencephaly, or a deformation of the skull, the risk rose from 2 per 10,000 to 7 per 10,000. For heart defects, the risk rose from 10 per 10,000 to 24 per 10,000.

In their study, the researchers emphasized that the Prozac and Paxil birth defects risk is small, but their findings do show a link. In light of this link, they called for further studies into the use of SSRI antidepressants in pregnant women.

The Injurious Link Between SSRI Antidepressants and Birth Defects

The Injurious Link Between SSRI Antidepressants and Birth DefectsA grave conundrum is presented to women who suffer from depression during pregnancy. There are significant mental and physical health issues that must be considered in regards to medicating with a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant such as Celexa, Lexapro, Luvox, Symbyax, Paxil, Zoloft, or Prozac while pregnant. Ending use of an SSRI antidepressant during pregnancy poses a risk to the mother’s mental health as well as to the unborn child, depending on when discontinuance of the medication occurs.

If an SSRI antidepressant was taken by the pregnant mother into the third trimester, it has been discovered that these antidepressant medications leach through the placental sack, thus exposing the unborn child to the drugs, often causing a chemical attachment resulting in withdrawal upon the child’s birth or the mother’s sudden termination of SSRI use.Signs of withdrawal in the newborn child are irritable mood, breathing complications, trembling, feeding problems, and hypoglycemia.

In recognition of these withdrawal symptoms in newborn children, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2004 released a warning in regards to the use of SSRI antidepressants by pregnant women in their third trimester. In their statement, the FDA made the recommendation that pregnant women medicating with an SSRI antidepressant be placed on a schedule which over time would gradually lower their dosage of an antidepressant.

Though this FDA warning and recommendation was targeted at the prevention of withdrawal symptoms in the newborn child, such near termination of SSRI antidepressant use by the pregnant mother was seen to cause serious mental health issues including a severe episode of postpartum depression. Drug withdrawal is not the only source of suffering inflicted on an unborn child exposed to SSRI antidepressants.

Epidemiology magazine examined in their May 2012 issue a recent study on the health of pregnant mothers using SSRI antidepressants. The study found that there is a significant link between the use of an SSRI antidepressant and pre-term delivery. In this specific study led by the Yale School of Public Health, the SSRI under examination was Paxil. Use of Paxil and other SSRI antidepressants while pregnant have also been linked to a number of other birth defects that cause an undue amount of suffering for a newborn child. These SSRI-linked birth defects include Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), omphalocele, craniosynostosis, atrial septal defects, and ventricular septal defects.

FDA Announces 10 Drugs With Severe Birth Defect Warnings

San Diego, CA — (SBWIRE) — 01/10/2012 The drugs found on this list went through multiple tests, research experiments, and survey before the FDA classified them as dangerous to babies during pregnancy.

Zoloft (sertraline), a popular antidepressant known as a “selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor” (SSRI), is linked to dangerous side effects in users and serious birth defects (including, heart murmur, hole in the heart and other serious heart defects) if taken by pregnant women. Since 2006, the FDA has warned against the use of Zoloft and other SSRIs in pregnant mothers.

Paxil (paroxetine), one of the most widely prescribed SSRI’s for depression in adults has also been associated with serious side effects in men and women and very dangerous birth defects like heart defects that can result in death if taken by pregnant women. Also part of the 2006 study of SSRI side effects, Paxil has been identified by the FDA to be dangerous for women who are pregnant or who become pregnant.

Prozac (fluoxetine) is probably the most popular anti-depressant and SSRI prescribed by physicians over the past decade and is considered by the FDA to be highly dangerous for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Side effects of Prozac include heart defects, cleft palate/cleft lip, and persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns (PPHN).

Celexa (citalopram), one of the more recent brand-named SSRI’s used to treat depression, was identified by the FDA in 2011 as being linked to very serious side effects as well as birth defects. The FDA issued a warning to adults who took higher dosages of Celexa that they are at a greater risk of deadly heart conditions including fatal heart rhythm problems. Consumer Reports released an article on the study as well.

Wellbutrin (bupropion hydrochloride), was identified by the FDA in 2009 to have links to dangerous side effects and potentially fatal birth defects. A public health advisory was released by the FDA pointing out that Wellbutrin, Chantix and Zyban may increase the risk of suicide and serious neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) is prescribed by doctors to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder and is in the group of medications classified as SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Similar to Zoloft, Paxil and Prozac, Lexapro has been linked to serious and dangerous side effects including thoughts of suicide in adults and heart defects in children from mothers who have taken these products.

Effexor (venlafaxine) is an antidepressant and anti-anxiety drug that was approved by the FDA and released on the market in 2004 as an another SSRI. Since then it has been shown to have a direct correlation with permanent and dangerous birth defects including abdominal birth defects, anal atresia, cardiac defects, limb defects and genital defects.

Diflucan (fluconazole), a powerful anti-fungal medication prescribed to women with yeast infections and other types of fungal infections in the body and organs, may be associated with rare but very serious side effects and birth defects in infants whose mothers were treated with Diflucan. The FDA reported the following possible birth defects: mis-shaped head, cleft palate/cleft lip, joint deformities and congenital heart disease and heart defects.

Topamax (topiramate) is an anti-seizure drug used to treat epileptics and is also prescribed for adults suffering migraine headaches. In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration strengthened their warning based on new data that links Topamax to severe birth defects when used while pregnant. If you or someone you know has taken or is currently taking Topamax, it is strongly urged by the FDA to discuss alternative treatments for seizures and migraines.

Depakote (divalproex sodium), another popular anti-seizure drug prescribed by doctors to treat epileptic seizures, has been reported in some studies to be linked to severe birth defects and side effects. Birth defects identified in these studies include: holes in the heart, abnormal skull formation, cleft palate/cleft lip, and spina bifida.
