FDA Levaquin Warning: Serious Side Effects Could Become Permanent

By | Levaquin, Uncategorized

In mid-May 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a new safety warning about Levaquin (fluoroquinolone). The regulatory agency warned of serious side effects that could become permanent.

Levaquin side effects mentioned in the warning include:

  • Tendon, joint, and muscle pain
  • “Pins and needles” prickling sensation
  • Confusion
  • Hallucinations

According to the FDA, these side effects can occur simultaneously, and can become permanent.

With this new information, the FDA ordered that drug labels for Levaquin and other fluoroquinolone drugs be updated.

Invokana Ketoacidosis & Kidney Failure

By | Invokana, Uncategorized

Invokana diabetic ketoacidosisPeople with Type 2 diabetes take Invokana, or the version with metformin—Invokamet, to regulate blood sugar levels. Treating Type 2 diabetes with medication, along with improved diet and exercise, is important; however, in the case of Invokana and Invokamet, the risks may outweigh the benefits.

What is Invokana?

Invokana is a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It is only FDA-approved to treat Type 2 diabetes, not Type 1.

Invokana side effects

Invokana is linked to diabetic ketoacidosis. This occurs when the body overproduces a blood acid, called a ketone. Ketoacidosis is a serious condition that can result in hospitalization.

Ketoacidosis symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Confusion
  • Dehydration
  • Fatigue
  • Trouble breathing
  • Vomiting

The US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about diabetic ketoacidosis in May 2015. And adding to that warning, the FDA mandated that drug makers update warning labels to include information about ketoacidosis.

The FDA also required drug makers to begin postmarketing studies on ketoacidosis and patient health.

Another Invokana side effect is urinary tract infection that can cause kidney failure. People who used Invokana, and suffered kidney failure, ended up being hospitalized for their injuries.

We can help.

2700 Testosterone Gel Lawsuits in US

By | Pharmaceutical litigation, Testosterone, Uncategorized

testoserone_gelOver 2,700 testosterone gel lawsuits are pending in the US. According to a Forbes article from late October 2015, testosterone lawsuits numbered around 2,000 in August 2015. In the ensuing months, even more men who suffered serious testosterone side effects stepped forward, bringing the total near 3,000.

A legal representative commented in the Forbes article that the lawsuits are “not quite to the halfway point in terms of the number of suits we’re going to see.”

Lawsuits consolidated in Chicago

Testosterone lawsuits are consolidated in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in Chicago. The MDL cites 7 companies that make testosterone products.

The US District Court Judge managing the MDL, Judge Matthew Kennelly, is moving pretrial proceedings along at an efficient pace. In late 2016, the court will begin the bellwether trial process; at this time, rulings will be made on bellwether testosterone lawsuits that both parties carefully selected as representative of a majority of the MDL lawsuits.

AbbVie and AndroGel

This first round of bellwether cases scheduled for 2016 involves AbbVie and their testosterone product, AndroGel.

These AndroGel lawsuits allege that AbbVie’s testosterone product caused blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes. These lawsuits also argue that AbbVie’s AndroGel marketing campaigns misled them to believe the product as safe.

Decline in AndroGel sales

According to the Forbes article cited above, AndroGel sales plummeted as testosterone lawsuits rose. AndroGel sales dropped by 32% in the first 6 months of 2015.

Boston Scientific Ordered to Release Defective Transvaginal Mesh DocumentsBoston Scientific Ordered to Release Defective Transvaginal Mesh DocumentsWhen Judge Goodwin said he was going to “kick it into high gear”, he really meant it.

Representatives for plaintiffs and defendants will meet on June 2, 2015.

In the PTO, the court scheduled each MDL for about an hour-long meeting. The meeting schedule for June 2 is as follows:

Low Testosterone Ads & Disease Mongering

By | Pharmaceutical litigation, Testosterone, Uncategorized

testosteronegellawsuitTestosterone ads spread the word about low testosterone, or low T. And to some, low T is an invented disease.

In an editorial recently published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, two men’s health experts expressed concerns about direct-to-consumer ads for testosterone products, like AndroGel and Axiron.

Thomas Perls, a Boston University professor and Boston Medical Center geriatrician, and David Handelsman, a University of Sydney professor, authored the editorial.

Perls and Handelsman consider direct-to-consumer ads to be “’disease mongering’”, since the ads treat male aging as a curable health condition, as opposed to a normal part of life.

The two authors have called for a ban on testosterone ads.

Why the Worry about Ads?

If there weren’t serious testosterone side effects, like heart attack and stroke, then testosterone ads wouldn’t be a concern. However, researchers have discovered a strong link between testosterone use in older males and cardiovascular problems, including heart attack and stroke.

Perls and Handelsman may be correct in calling for a ban on testosterone ads.

Pharmaceutical Marketing Factors in Testosterone Lawsuits

By | Pharmaceutical litigation, Testosterone, Uncategorized

testosteronegellawsuitTwo men over 40 used testosterone gel, considering it a way to restore youthfulness. One man suffered a spinal stroke; the other man experienced a bilateral pulmonary embolism.

These two men―who shared their stories in a recent Forbes article―attribute their health problems to testosterone.

More and more health care providers and patients are becoming aware of these serious testosterone side effects, which also include heart attack and stroke.

The two men interviewed by Forbes didn’t suffer from hypogonadism, a medical condition that causes low testosterone levels; rather, these men fell prey to aggressive pharmaceutical marketing.

Ads promising the fountain of youth for older males drew these two men to testosterone gel, a lure that injured rather than restored.

To date, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hasn’t recognized low testosterone, or low T, in older males as a real medical condition warranting testosterone replacement therapy. The FDA has only approved testosterone use for patients diagnosed with hypogonadism.

Pharmaceutical marketing for testosterone gel aggressively targeted older men, persuading them to use a product for a health condition not even recognized by the FDA.

Clearly, in this case, pharmaceutical marketing went too far.

Mesh Warrior Is a Voice for Victims

By | Defective Medical Device litigation, Transvaginal Mesh, Uncategorized

gavel_transvaginalmeshlawsuitGiven any opportunity, a Dallas woman, who has named herself the mesh warrior, will talk to people about the devastating transvaginal mesh side effects about which she is familiar through her mom’s complications. The mesh warrior, Aaron Horton, started to spread awareness about the dangers of transvaginal mesh through writing about her mom’s experience.

In addition to writing, Horton attended the trials of transvaginal mesh lawsuits. At these trials, Horton sought to draw attention to herself, and ultimately, to her cause. To accomplish this, she donned a dramatic blue lip color. Once Horton captured someone’s attention through her appearance, she used it as an opportunity to spread awareness about transvaginal mesh complications.

According to the Dallas Observer, in the fall of 2014, Horton launched the Mesh Warrior Foundation, a nonprofit advocacy organization.

The Dallas Observer described Horton as “a voice of support to women who have lost everything after the procedure and have no one else to talk to”.

It is heartening to hear of someone so dedicated to mesh victim advocacy.

Ontario Yaz & Yasmin Class Action Lawsuit Approved

By | Pharmaceutical litigation, Uncategorized, Yaz/Yasmin

yaz_lawsuit_bayer_multidistrict_litigation_yaz_settlements_yaz_yasmin_lawsuit_settlementsThe Ontario Superior Court of Justice has approved a Yaz and Yasmin class action lawsuit. The lawsuit includes all women residing in Ontario and Quebec who used Yaz and/or Yasmin from 2004 – 2011.

The unique aspect of this class action lawsuit is that it automatically includes Yaz and Yasmin users, regardless of whether or not they have formally requested inclusion in the case. The legal representatives of the plaintiffs have posted information about how to opt-out of the case. If a woman prefers to opt-out, she must do so before February 9, 2015.

This Yaz and Yasmin class action lawsuit targets the drugs’ manufacturer, Bayer, and centers around injuries suffered by plaintiffs. These Yaz and Yasmin injuries include blood clots, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, gallbladder disease, and stroke. The Canadian case alleges that Bayer was aware of the risks associated with both of their contraceptive drugs, but failed to give proper warning to health care providers and patients regarding these serious side effects.

Similar suits have been filed in the U.S. by Carey Danis & Lowe on behalf of women whose lives have been forever changed by these two contraceptive drugs, as well as by the generic version, Ocella.

St. Louis Surgeon Gains Renown for Mesh Removal

By | Defective Medical Device litigation, Transvaginal Mesh, Uncategorized

transvaginalmeshsurgeryA St. Louis surgeon at Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur has gained a positive reputation among women who have visited him for transvaginal mesh removal surgery. The surgeon, Dr. Dionysios Veronikis, or Dr. V, as he is called by his patients, has seen women from all over the world.

As detailed in a recent St. Louis Post-Dispatch article, Dr. V’s patients have endured an incredible amount of pain as a result of their transvaginal mesh implants. For many women, this pain has altered their lives to the point where their movement became extremely limited, leading to a poor quality of life.

One of the women interviewed for the article described receiving a transvaginal mesh implant to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Though the implant solved her incontinence, it brought a new, and arguably, much worse health problem. The woman described being in severe pain doing any kind of movement. Continuing to live her life with the mesh was no longer an option for her, so she began her search for someone who could successfully remove it.

The woman flew to the U.S. from Australia, underwent the removal surgery, and thankfully, reported being pain-free following the surgery.

Severe pain is one of many transvaginal mesh side effects. Others include bleeding, organ damage, infection, painful intercourse, and urinary problems.

Thanks to Dr. V, many of the women who have been injured by transvaginal mesh can go back to enjoying life.

Testosterone Gel Side Effects Overview

By | Pharmaceutical litigation, Testosterone, Uncategorized

testoserone_gelThe promises of improved well being made in advertisements for testosterone gel have attracted large numbers of men. However, these promises fall short, and obscure a serious testosterone gel side effect. Since the use of these gels to treat low testosterone is somewhat new, health risks are still coming to light, with one of them being a threat to a patient’s heart health.

In September 2014, an advisory committee appointed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) voted to order manufacturers of testosterone gels, such as AbbVie, the company responsible for AndroGel, and Eli Lilly, who is responsible for Axiron, to undertake research into testosterone gels and cardiovascular health.

Testosterone Gel Side Effects on Women & Children

Testosterone gel side effects are not limited to the patient, since these drugs require topical application.

For some women who have come into contact with a patient who uses testosterone gel, side effects include acne and abnormal hair growth.

For children, testosterone gel side effects include an acceleration in puberty.

Carey Danis & Lowe Is Here to Help

Suffering from the serious side effects of a drug that was advertised as a miracle solution can result in much distress.
