What is Essure?

Essure is considered a permanent type of birth control, which is why women are not expected to get pregnant while they are on it. A healthcare professional inserts flexible coils into the vagina, the cervix and up into the fallopian tubes. In the three months that follow, tissue forms around the coils thus forming a barrier which ensures sperm cannot get to the eggs, preventing conception.

Essure Side Effects & Complications

In September 2015, the FDA convened a meeting that put together an advisory committee made up of obstetricians and gynecologists. The meeting was held so that the FDA could hear scientific and clinical options of Essure as well as the experiences of patients who have used Essure.

In addition to this meeting, the FDA organized a public docket and solicited for comments on Essure. During the period that the docket was opened, FDA received 2,800 comments, taking the time to review each one.

Complications of Essure Concluded by the FDA:

  • Unplanned pregnancy
  • Weak or aching joints and muscles
  • A feeling of fatigue
  • Changes in weight
  • Hair loss
    Headaches
  • Changes in mood with some women reporting feeling depressed.
  • Persistent pain
  • Bleeding that is abnormal or irregular
  • Allergic or hypersensitive reactions that were previously not there
  • Migration of the device into the abdominal or pelvic cavity
  • A perforated uterus or fallopian tubes

The FDA also received reports of immediate reactions in clinical trials. This includes mild to moderate pain pelvic or back pain, vaginal bleeding, and cramping. Other symptoms reported were vomiting, cramping, dizziness, and nausea.

The above are all symptoms that you may have been adversely affected. If you are experiencing any of these, immediately go to the hospital for treatment by a healthcare provider to determine if the problem is related to the contraceptive. Should that be the case, surgery can be performed to remove it.

If you or a loved one has been adversely affected by using Essure, you need to establish whether you have a case. You might think that there are other factors that led to your getting pregnant, having an ectopic pregnancy, or losing it other than the contraceptive you were on. As your Essure lawsuit attorney, we offer an initial consultation to verify the viability of your case at no cost.

Essure Lawsuits

When women who were on the contraceptive Essure but still fell pregnant, the case for liability would seem clear and straightforward. However, in many instances, the manufacturer of this product may try to escape liability so that they don’t have to offer compensation.

An example of this is that the manufacturer may try to argue that the victim didn’t use another form of contraception for three months after Essure has been inserted, as is stated and recommended. It may be difficult to prove that the couple did in fact use condoms during that time, proving that it was without a doubt Essure that failed to work as it should.

If you believe you have a case against the manufacturer, they will undoubtedly be difficult to work with. You need a skilled and experienced lawyer who will aggressively fight to get the compensation that you are entitled to. Carey Danis & Lowe has successfully settled cases against Bayer, the Essure manufacturer, in cases brought forward by women who have fallen pregnant while on the contraceptive or those who have suffered serious health complications because of it.
